< The Emotions of Tears > explores the complexity of human emotions through tears. Human tears have evolved in a way that strongly communicates with each other through the process of reddening faces and pupils as an complex expression of human emotions such as sadness, happiness, and surprise. The use of the crying faces is to emphasize the universal nature of emotions and to transcend language and cultural barriers, by using empathy. The artwork's images are created by using a machine learning algorithm trained to recognize and reproduce the facial features of a crying person. Fragmented and blurry images were selected amongst many other images generated by algorithms, so that the viewers can immerse themselves into the images and analyze these emotions in their own way. As machines advance and become able to recognize and respond to human emotions, it makes us ponder about how we are shaping the ability to understand and express our emotions.
< The Emotions of Tears > reminds us of the complexity of human emotions and the importance of empathy in building meaningful relationships between humans and machines, and invites us to consider how technology is shaping the expression of our emotions.
