Sense of the Aerial is a video work exploring how plants and non-human beings learn new forms of balance and perception in the air, in an age when solid ground has disappeared.
In this work, “ground” is not merely the earth beneath our feet. It is a metaphor for everything we once believed to be stable — earth, settlement, relationships. But in a world shaped by climate crisis, disaster, displacement, rapid technological change, and the uncertainties of the AI era, this foundation no longer holds firm. We all stand on ground that is shifting.
Sense of the Aerial does not represent this condition through the human figure. Instead, it reveals it through plants and non-human beings leaving the ground and moving into the air. Suspended and swaying, they sense the distance and movement of one another, discovering new ways to survive.
Here, the air is not a space of lack but a space of possibility — a place where beings who have lost the ground learn to sense, adapt, and form relationships anew. The roots and stems of plants become the structure of an aerial ecosystem, within which non-human beings continuously adjust their own bodies to remain.
In this work, balance is never a fixed state. It is not the absence of movement, but the capacity to respond to it. Sense of the Aerial asks how we might retain our sense of the world, and rebuild balance through relation with others, even as the ground beneath us continues to shake.
